Back in the AMC camp after many years absence (driver restored a '70 Donohue 360, Bayshore Blue w/white landau vinyl, blue int, A/C, p/s, pdb, console auto, 3.54 diff, was originally West TX AMC district reps demo according to original owner. I owned her from '88 to '94). I have now acquired a 1970 Javelin base model w/232 and auto on column (and an aftermarket installed A/C from the late 70's maybe...?) which has been sitting since about '92. I also just picked up a running 1974 Jeep Wagoneer w 401 4V (original Z code) that appears to have never been out of the vehicle or molested in any way and is complete with the AC compressor (said to be locked up, but belt still on and all hoses attached) and pwr steering still there. Probably has not had a tune-up in forever (oil is full but black as coal). By the odo it would appear to have 131,000 on it and have only seen a light hint of oil smoke once on a cold day start up which could have been a little cold engine cloud too since it was in low 40's at the time.
Now, I have never attempted a swap like this and am in need of technical advice and info, so here goes:
Is there any difference in the cross member and motor mounts (position or otherwise) on a 70 Javelin 6 and 8 cyl? The 70 does not
have a front sway bar if this helps any.
What are the (if any) differences in suspension components between 6 and 8 cyl Javelins in 1970? I would also like to utilize the ps pump from the Jeep, but
what componets needed (and that will fit) to get this working?
Has anyone here done a similar swap and if so, what did you run into that I should be looking out for?
The Jeep has what appears to be a 3 or 4 core radiator and I would love to use this as I live in East Texas, anyone know of any fit issues (no, I have not had either vehicle long enough yet to even take measurements)?
I am planning on doing a full tune-up/clean up (and out ; ) on the 401 while it's in the Jeep to see if the motor can make the Javelin into a running project car before I remove it and then have to remove it again immediately if it must be rebuilt right away, make sense? In other words, I want to get some enjoyment out of it as I go and before I have to spend the big bucks.
This 70 also had a landau top, but apparently the glue used in March '70 (when my Donohue was built) and the glue used in Sept '69 (when this base model was built) were worlds different. The Donohue's most rust free metal was under the glue, this base model has the worst roof rot and previous repair work that worsened it that I have ever seen, so I will most likely need a donor car to repair the rear roof area. I will also need a gas tank and straps, d/s door glass (glue in), p/s door (the one on it is not original and is creased in) and both door panels (black), plus if I do go back with landau vinyl (probably will to minimize repair finishing costs) I will need the across the roof trim, the pieces that run along with drip rail moulding and the pieces that run along top of quarter panels. I'm new on this forum, so forgive me if this was supposed to be posted elsewhere...and it's a bit wordy I know... Any and all help is greatly appreciated to bring this gal back to better than her original glory. Thanks, Reagan.
